A Million Theories

1
July

I had my rheumatologist appointment about 12 hours ago. The doctor didn’t know what would cause the toe swelling/redness/itching. He added some extra meds for pain relief, and I guess I can officially acknowledge that I’m on something for pain. Of course, my pain management meds aren’t the kind that get you all dopey and stuff. I guess that’s good, since those are the ones that make me hyperactive.

I had gained 9 pounds since he last saw me. He didn’t fuss. He doesn’t usually fuss. He seems to get that I don’t want to be overweight. I wish other doctors were so understanding.

He looked over my request for student loan discharge, and he said that he’ll fill it out, but first I have to have some kind of physical exertion test. (He wants to be able to tell them exactly what I can and can’t do, and not lie about it.) He also advised me to take a copy to the psychiatrist to get them to fill it out, since he said that that should help my case. The only problem with that is that I’m about to start to a new psychiatrist, and typically when I see a doctor for the first few times, they don’t believe that there is anything wrong with me. I don’t really get that. I guess they have this belief that if you have certain symptomatology then you present in a standard way. Typically, therapists are the first ones to understand that I’m not a standard case kind of girl. Maybe since the new pdoc is one I’ve seen before, who (on her first visit with me) wanted to have me locked up, she’ll actually believe that I’m a loon or something.

There was a report on the news last night, which I found a bit annoying. The investigative reporter keeps bringing up safety issues that she says exist at UAH, which don’t really seem that different from anything I’ve encountered in various educational settings in my life. This time she brought up the bitchy philosophy teacher. Apparently, there was a student who (a week after the shooting) said something about maybe he’d get respect if he brought a pistol to class. She gave all these details about the student, because some was public record (and other stuff had been leaked to her), but she didn’t disclose the professor. She did say that the professor was a female philosophy teacher. Even if I hadn’t (briefly) been in that program, I could have easily found out who the teacher was. That department is relatively small. Of the 8 or 9 professors that might teach in a given semester in the department, only 4 are regulars, and only 1 from the entire group is female. That would be the professor that led to me dropping Modern Philosophy. She called my papers bizarre. She’s also the professor who kicks students out of class for disagreeing with her, and all that fun stuff. Basically, if you write down what she says word for word and don’t question anything, you can pass. Since I’m of the opinion that part of learning (especially in something like Philosophy) requires insight and thought, I knew quickly that we weren’t destined to be super-buds. With her classes being required for the major, I determined that that wasn’t the major. Admittedly, I didn’t vocalize any intent to harm her, but I can’t say that I didn’t idly think about it. Mainly I just wanted to slap her or something like that. I have a feeling that most people who have a tendency to disagree with this particular professor have the same experience. Back to the whole issue, I emailed her and told her that this wasn’t the first time that that professor had had issues with students in her class, and I felt that it was a bit lopsided to present her as a victim. We’ve emailed back and forth a couple of times, and now she wants me to tell her more. It kind of makes me uncomfortable. I know I brought the whole thing up with her, and if I felt that her intentions were more than just getting some kind of journalistic gold star, I might feel more free to discuss it. Besides, what if what I said had some kind of negative impact on someone else’s life? I would actually feel guilty. My conscience can be abnormally restrictive sometimes.

Oh, I still have no clue when I’ll see Eclipse, so I’m basically trying to avoid all social networking until then. I know that this will post on a few places, but I thought I’d explain why I was kind of in absentia. I know that I’ve read the books, but I still have this fear of being spoiled or hearing something that might effect how I feel about the movie. Since it happens to be the one based on my favorite book in the series, then I kind of have this fear of being semi-spoiled.

The Devil’s Son Has Left the Neighborhood

28
May

When last we visited the story of Satan’s Spawn, he was living a few doors down from my family and trying to make our lives a living, well, you know. I guess, I should update you on a very recent development…the Spawned-Fam have left. They didn’t sell their houses. They didn’t send out announcements (do people even do such a thing?) or put up a big blinking sign that said, “We’re leaving, you may throw us (or yourselves) a party!” No, they packed up, and moved out over 2 days. Almost 20 years of being the crappy neighbors that they’ve been and no goodbye? This is sad, and cause for celebration.

My laptop came back the day after it left. It was fixed (both the optical drive and the touchpad), and, more shockingly, it was clean. It’s as smooth as a baby’s behind, if the baby had a metal butt. It’s so weird to be able to see things without having to look through dust and sneeze marks (sorry, if that’s TMI).

Um, I’ve updated some tumblr addresses (some are waiting to propagate):

And there are some all new ones (may not have propagated yet):

Yeah, I know, I need some kind of psychological help for the massive numbers of tumblrs. Hah.

Inappropriate Affect

19
January

As someone who has been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder in the Schizophrenia spectrum, and someone who takes pleasure in sneaking looks at my medical chart when the doctor leaves it open in front of me (seriously, doc?), I know a thing or two about seeing the phrase “inappropriate affect”. Typically, they really mean, flat affect, which is when I can appear to be kind of like I have no mood. Inappropriate affect really means something along the lines of a mood or reaction that doesn’t correspond to what is really called for in a situation. Apparently, cracking jokes during a funeral is inappropriate.

So, there was a small plane that crashed yesterday in Madison, which is the inconsequential (it’s a real word, it even appears in Twilight–just not as many times as chagrin) suburb that is pretty much surrounded by Huntsville. Okay, so better not focus on the horribleness that is Madison, which could take up an entire entry. Two people were killed and I was making jokes about things, but not like truly disrespectful ones. I joke to cope. However, joking during a tragedy, which I guess two people in a crash being killed is a tragedy, even if the crash was in a neighborhood on a day when everyone was home.

Well, my reaction is considered inappropriate, which I guess is fair. However, is it really right to say that my joking to cope with tragedy is worse than television channels having to state at what time shows get re-aired for those people who think that it was a big inconvenience to their daily schedule to have things like Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz and The Doctors (I am not kidding about these shows being scheduled against one another) not show up because of some silly little plane crash. Of course, these are probably people from the same stock as the people who make the snide remarks about when meteorologists have to interrupt soaps and talk shows due to the tornado warnings we so frequently have. You know because the value of Oprah’s Book Club and whoever is killing whoever else on General Hospital are soooo much more important than those pesky little people that could be killed by something out of their control. (I do want to know why Ellen never gets re-aired, though…)

If it is a symptom of a psychological problem for me to have a sense of humor in the face of badness, then it must be a symptom of a lack of humanity for people to place some damn tv show in front of the value of someone’s life or loss of said life.

The League of Missing Vampires

31
July

Now, if you’re like me and you love the whole vampire genre (not one of those people who’d want to be bitten, just enjoy reading about it), then you would probably understand the complete giddiness that I had when my Entertainment Weekly showed up proclaiming the 20 Greatest Vampires. Okay, I agree with inclusion of Edward, Angel, Bill, and Eric.

My issues with the issue? I understand you have to include Dracula, but, for goodness sake, make up your mind on which Dracula is best. There is no need for multiple Draculas. And Lestat as #1? Surely there has to be a vampire who is better than Lestat. Most people I know who are fans of the genre generally skip Anne Rice.

The honorary list included Elvira (uh, I always just thought she was supposed to be some gothic queen), and I think the Counting Count from Sesame Street. (It was either him or Count Chocula.) Of course, the list did not include some great vampire portrayals:

Willow Rosenberg was a vampire for 2 episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (The Wish and, greatest ep ever, Dopplegangland). Where was she? Also, temporary vamp – Xander Harris. Then there was Drusilla and Spike. How can we forget them? Spike was able to add so much depth to the fifth season of Angel. Drusilla pretty much made so many of the moments of season 2 of Buffy.

Some of the Twilight vamps should have been included. I understand that they couldn’t include all of the Cullens or the Volturi or Victoria, James, and Laurent, but couldn’t they pick more than just Edward?

True Blood and Southern Vampire Mystery series vampires such as Pam and the various Kings and Queens and Sheriffs.

Oh, and what about when Paige of Charmed was temporarily a vampire? She was fun with her “why you gotta be like that” line. It was amazing.

There are entire books and series that they forgot. Mitchell from Being Human was nowhere to be found.

I sat down and wrote my list of missing vampires that could have made the list. I could think of at least 21 off the top of my head. 21…and yet, EW couldn’t find their favorite Dracula and thought it would be cute to come up with their crappy choices for Honorary Mention. Clearly, these were people who just picked the most popular vampires and left it at that.

A new trend…

30
July

Every Thursday, I’m going to try to post something related to the Twilight franchise. If you want to skip these because you have a distaste for Twilight, then that’s fine. If you want to stick around, I’ll try not to bore you. :)

Rachelle vs. Summit: Round 1
So, as pretty much everyone who has been in Twitter-dom knows in the past twenty-four to thirty-six hours, there has been a firestorm of tweets about the recasting of the role of Victoria. Rachelle (twitter user: @rachellelefevre claims that she was caught off-guard by the news. Summit basically says she’s brought it on herself by not letting them know until the 20th about her role in a new movie that starts filming the same day as Eclipse. Rachelle stated that she would only have a 10-day overlap. Summit counters these claims. It goes on and on, and leaves the fans wondering what to do. It’s easiest to blame Summit, even if they didn’t know about the conflict. Still, if they only found out about it on the 20th, how did they already book Bryce Dallas Howard, who is a bit bigger name than Lefevre by the 28th for a movie that starts filming in just a few short months? Surely Howard would have needed more than a week to clear her schedule and become prepared enough to take on the reigns of the character of Victoria. Even if she couldn’t fully become familiar with the part, she could have at least been more immersed in the fandom and maybe issuing an “I come in peace” kind of statement. (Remember, Twilight fans don’t take to changes lightly.)

New Moon Gone Nude
Jamie Campbell Bower has told MTV news about a nude scene involving the Volturi. This has led to jokes about the possibility of an R-rating, which many fans doubt could happen given that Stephenie Meyer has always promised PG-13 ratings. I doubt the church would be too happy if a movie that came from Meyer’s books was transformed into an R-rated movie. Since Deseret has sold some of the books and the church kind of half-heartedly promotes the franchise, they would probably “freak” over this new development.
