My Year in Music: 2013

After seeing Jenn’s post on her top tracks of 2013, I thought I’d do the unoriginal thing and check and see what songs I listened to the most over the last year. According to, the top 25 songs are:

  1. One Direction – Story of My Life
  2. Mumford & Sons – Broken Crown
  3. Lindsey Pavao – Say Aah (The Voice Performance)
  4. Ed Sheeran – The A Team
  5. Sara Bareilles – Breathe Again
  6. Flo Rida – In the Ayer (feat.
  7. Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into The Dark
  8. Ellie Goulding – Lights
  9. Katy Perry – Circle the Drain
  10. Ed Sheeran – Drunk
  11. Dixie Chicks – Top Of The World
  12. Kelly Clarkson – Already Gone
  13. Ed Sheeran – Small Bump
  14. Taylor Swift – All Too Well
  15. Christina Aguilera – The Right Man
  16. The Maine – My Heroine
  17. Eagles – Hotel California (LP Version)
  18. Leona Lewis – Better in Time
  19. Kate Voegele – Forever And Almost Always
  20. Maroon 5 – One More Night
  21. Miranda Lambert – Gunpowder & Lead
  22. Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth
  23. Gossip – Heavy Cross
  24. ZZ Ward – Blue Eyes Blind
  25. AFI – Prelude 12/21

The pathetic thing is that the number one song is from a group that I spent the majority of the last few years criticizing, then I heard this song and now I feel like Paul Rudd should be mocking me in some SNL skit. In the last month, I have listened to said song 99 times. That’s a little sad, isn’t it? If you don’t think it is, keep in mind that those 99 times occurred between November 27 and the end of the year. Also, it was 43 more times than I listened to Broken Crown, which was one of the other songs that I was overly obsessed with this past year.

I also went ahead and checked out my top artist list. Guess what? One Direction made it onto this list as well. (They also made it onto my top played albums list.) Maybe I need some kind of psychological help specifically for this new-found appreciation of that group. But they only made it to number 5 on this list, between the Glee Cast (with 951 listens) at #1 and Anna Nalick (with 100) at #25:

  1. Glee Cast
  2. Taylor Swift
  3. Maroon 5
  4. P!nk
  5. One Direction
  6. Christina Aguilera
  7. Florence + the Machine
  8. Mariah Carey
  9. Ed Sheeran
  10. Rihanna
  11. *NSYNC
  12. Britney Spears
  13. Katy Perry
  14. Mumford & Sons
  15. Dixie Chicks
  16. Kelly Clarkson
  17. Adele
  18. Amy Winehouse
  19. Beyoncé
  20. Whitney Houston
  21. Iron & Wine
  22. Melanie Martinez
  23. Gin Wigmore
  24. The Avett Brothers
  25. Anna Nalick

Oddly, until the last month, I only had 1 song scrobbled from The Avett Brothers and now I’ve listened to them 101 times…I guess I may be forming a new musical obsession. Other music obsessions that started this year: Melanie Martinez, Ed Sheeran (you gotta love a ginger born on February 17), and Mumford & Sons. (I blame Tumblr for those last 2 obsessions, as well as my overplaying “My Heroine” by The Maine.)

Anyway, if you want to keep up with what music I actually listen (and, possibly, become obsessed with) to throughout the year, you can do so via my profile or my Spotify account.
