Apparently not. After spammers began leaving ask box messages promoting things, Tumblr started cracking down on what exactly can go into ask boxes. No URLs was an obvious one, and you were given an error if you attempted to send one. Less obvious, however, was that you could not use more than three periods in a paragraph, which lead to the message you sent disappearing somewhere into the Tumblr ether without the sender receiving an error. Recently, they stopped allowing users to use more than one paragraph at all, added a maximum character count, and only allowed a certain number of messages to be sent in a time frame. There was not any kind of Staff post whatsoever to alert users to these changes or to explain what was now allowed, and undoubtedly as a result many a message (question or not) was sent between Tumblr users without the sender realizing it was never received. If they were trying to crack down on spam, Tumblr sure seemed to be hurting the habits of the site’s legitimate users in the process.
Basically messages have become a useless and unfunny joke.
Absolutely pathetic. Is there anything we can do about this? You know… to make the Tumblr people LISTEN to us?
In the meantime, if any of my followers want to talk to me, you can ask for my facebook account.
Wow, fuck this. You can always reach me through email at firstname.lastname@example.org
This happened when, exactly? Because I had that discussion with akagoldfish just last week and we were definitely discussing via messages with at least 3 periods in paragraphs and the character maximum never came up, despite some fairly lengthy messages.
The three periods in a paragraph thing must not be true, but I’ve had enough messages either not reach the person they were intended for or not reach me to know that there has definitely been some problem. It definitely seemed to happen more with longer messages, also.
I figured the problem was Tumblr’s servers acting up again, and that the paragraph and text limit was some sort of quick fix. To hear now that my messages may have been eaten because Tumblr arbitrarily decided to embargo messages carrying some flagged content that THEY NEVER FUCKING TOLD US ABOUT makes me fucking ANGRY.
What an amateur night response to a completely unnovel problem that ever social media site has to deal with. This makes the time tumblr let their serves go down for a whole day without putting up a “site is down” card look like the height of IT professionalism. How fucking bush league.
HEY TUMBLR, I WANT MY FUCKING MESSAGES BACK
Another thing that they have disabled is the ability to import RSS feeds to the site. If you have the ability now and want to keep it, then make sure to never delete them from your account. I accidentally lost the ability because I was going to try to redo my last.fm weekly most played import. I deleted the importing of THAT feed, which led to my loss of ability to add any other feeds. I will never be able to import feeds on my account again. So, if you import feeds on your account, keep that in mind.
